that's subject to review by something called the committee on foreign investments in the united states. a big committee that reviews this stuff. the treasury secretary heads it up. when that committee was reviewing this deal with, congress went absolutely nuts over it it. in the end, that deal did not go through. that was in 2005. china was not allowed to come in and buy that company. now they are trying good. they are in the process of trying to buy a canadian oil company. but again, the committee on foreign investments in the u.s. has some jurisdiction here because the canadian company does a lot of business in our gulf of mexico. this is a chinese government-owned giant oil company trying to buy american oil infrastructure. think the deal is going to go through this time? it's a $15 billion oil deal. you think it's going to go through? it didn't in 2005. hount this new version? since the last time the united states said no, cnooc is famous for going into business with iran. they are in the process of developing a huge iranian natural gas field. i know it's china and china doesn't fo

the president of the united states address the people of america in his acceptance speech, and i read that this morning, and you haven't perhaps gotten a chance to do that, but if you did, perhaps like me, you found it extraordinarily disappointing. surprisingly disappointing, because his speech four years ago he laid out a whole series of lofty goals, and unfortunately, he was unable to meet them. as a matter of fact, i can think of very few of the promises that he made four years ago that he has kept. he said he'd raise incomes for people, and in fact, they have gone down by $5,000 a family. he said he'd create more new businesses, and people who wanted to start a business would be encourage d to do so, be but in fact, we are at a 30-year low in new business start-ups. he would get the people back the work. you remember with his stimulus plan, the stimulus said that if we let him borrow $787 billion, he would hold unemployment below 8%, but it has been 43 straight months above 8%, and today, 23 million americans stop looking for work or out of work or underemployed. it is a national

. one of the least controversial things you could possibly imagine the united states government agreeing to. well, a bill to adjust that payment for the cost of living was brought to the senate floor last thursday. it was expected to go ahead, no mus, no fuss. who is going to argue with that? but it was blocked by someone in governor romney's party. an unnamed republican senator has put a hold on the cost of living adjustment to the surviving children and spouse's. the same bill is holding up the wounded in the war. governor romney, i realize you're having a hard time getting the training wheels off but here's an easy one, should someone from your own party lift that hold from those people, should the republican senator holding this up keep that hold in place or drop it. you're the leader of that party. do you have anything to say on this? 24 hours later it turns out governor romney does not have anything to say on this. but since that angry little report on this show last night, today whoever the republican senator was who was holding up that payment to veterans and their family, today

is building an offshore oil well in a sea 90 miles off the north slope between the united states and russia. just the possibility of a disaster like the one in the gulf back in 2010 has people in alaska very concerned. alison kosik is at the new york stock exchange. this project has been in the work for six years now? >> there has been. there's even been a two-year delay for more safety testing because of the bp disaster that happened in the gulf of mexico. i want to give you an idea just what this project looks like. this is the animation from shell oil of the site we're talking about. what's happened here is the obama administration, it gave the go ahead to start what it calls limited preparatory activities. that includes installing a blowout preventer. we all learned that term two years ago when pb's blowout preventer failed in the gulf of mexico and launched the biggest oil disaster. that prompted a moratorium on all offshore drilling on new projects. the u.s. geological survey estimates we may be able to get more than 90 billion barrels of oil, carol, from this part of the world. that'
